When we tell you that duo Fika is based in South London, it’s really no surprise as soon as you hit play on the chillstep, jazz-laced electronic production of their latest output ‘Free’. It’s a breezy number that pays homage to the hip-hop, jazz, soul fusion sound that we’ve come to know from other artists south of the Thames River, such as Mom Tudie, Loyle Carner, Tom Misch etc. The sultry aesthetic of ‘Free’ springs from the theme of a loyal partner who finds themselves wandering… “what if I was single again?” This narrative plays out in the mind’s eye, coming to life in the low-slung groover through Sam and Al’s combined talents for songwriting and production. ‘Free’ is only the second track from the emerging duo, so if you like what you hear, be sure to backtrack to debut ‘Wait For You’. - Hannah Thacker
